In 2022, Avani Dias took on the role of the ABC's South Asia Correspondent.
When she got to Delhi, she was excited and daunted by the task of reporting on the complexities of the most populous region on earth.
Avani was immediately thrust into one of the biggest stories of the decade: the re-emergence of India as a global economic and military giant, while hanging on to its democracy.
She witnessed first-hand how Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recently re-elected for a third term, is idolised by much of the country.
But after she decided to make a podcast about him called 'Looking for Modi', Avani's reporting came under increasing scrutiny from government officials.
Then, when she was about to renew her visa, a call came through from a bureaucrat telling her to prepare to leave the country in two weeks' time.
