Plenty of you opt for prevention
Carry cardboard, [a] beach towel or your sun visor and leave them on the windscreen to keep the frost off. Alternatively, a fitted sheet thrown over most cabs does the job. — Jean
A length of shade cloth I got at the tip shop and cut into three does our cars here. It prevents the frost and doesn't freeze onto the surface like sheets and towels do. — Allison
I live on the back of the Snowy Mountains. I park my ute, nudged into bushes. [It's] manicured so the front of vehicle goes under one side. Works well. — Christopher
I park my car so that it faces east and gets the morning sun, which generally melts the frost by the time I need to go to work. I have an old sheet which we cut in half that covers the back window which I pull off frozen. — Nadine
Others shared their go-to tools
Tap water in a squeezy drink bottle with the nozzle. You can direct the water to where it's needed and you refill and go tomorrow! — Emily
Credit cards don't cut the mustard on hard frost... and putting water on when it is still well below zero just adds hard ice. So gloves, a good scraper, hot air from the inside and elbow grease! — Neal
I imported ice scrapers to give to my coworkers [as I grew up in Canada]. The short handled ones work best if you can reach, but they make ones with long handles and a brush which are very handy. — Evan
Just run your engine with the de-mister on. It will only take a few minutes. No need to slop water around on a freezing morning. — Eric
Start running the car and a bucket of water thrown over windscreen. Just make sure wipers aren't on automatic, [I] had to go back inside and change clothes once. — Gail
Spray-on de-icer from the auto accessories shop. Works in seconds. — Duncan
Cover with sheet night prior. Or hot water bottle onto dash (not touching glass) before breakfast. Frost is melted above it, and softened over the rest of the windscreen when you go to drive off. — Debbie
Some approaches are novel
Every morning in winter in Yorkshire l went out with a half potato. [It] doesn't scratch the glass and works a treat. Water is never a good solution as it freezes over again. — Caroline
Salt on a cloth! — Alan
Warm water in a ziplock bag will melt ice without adding more liquid to freeze over again. — Fiona
For those with a bigger budget
For electric vehicles, use the app to turn on heater before you brush your teeth. — Nelson
Finally, a few that made us laugh
A pot of boiling water. It works wonder[s], but you can do it only once. — Maddy
As a Canadian living in Australia I find this adorable. — Pablo
Not live in an area where you have to do this. — Roz
