West Australian Senator Fatima Payman has announced she's quit the Labor Party over the question of Palestinian statehood, and will sit on the cross bench as an independent.

Senator Payman was initially suspended from Labor's Caucus on Sunday, after she broke ranks with her party and backed a Greens motion on recognising a Palestinian state, vowing to cross the floor again on the issue.

For now she says her focus remains on representing the people of Western Australia.

But what does her future entail?

GUEST:

Kamalle Dabboussy is Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils.
