Schoolie who drank poisoned cocktail in Bali, Jasmine Baker, recovering at home
A NSW teenager poisoned in Bali while on schoolies celebrations is recovering at home after her end-of-school celebrations went horribly wrong.
Jasmine Baker, 17, was holidaying in Bali when she drank a potentially lethal cocktail, thought to contain methanol.
The compound is a poisonous by-product of alcohol production that can be fatal.
The former Erina High School student was admitted to Royal Darwin Hospital on Friday night and arrived back at her Empire Bay home on the NSW central coast last night.
Friends who had been celebrating with Jasmine in Bali arrived home this morning and went to the Baker family's home.
Her father, Errol Baker, says quick thinking from her friends - in particular one 17-year-old boy - saved her life.
"Her eyes started watering profusely; she was dizzy. [She] doesn't remember a lot from that point forward," Mr Baker said.
"It was only the brave action of one of her friends who got her back to the hotel from there.
"The Red Frog organisation got involved as well. They managed to get her to hospital and I'm lucky to have a little girl.
"I don't know how to say thank you because words simply are just not going to be enough."
Mr Baker has warned other Bali revellers about the dangers of illegal alcohol.
He fought back tears describing the young man who helped Jasmine.
"I suppose that's what champions and legends do, they step in without even realising it. That's exactly what he's done," he said.
Mr Baker is now contacting local schools in a bid to educate parents and students on the dangers of travelling abroad.
